The Greater Victoria Police Foundation’s inaugural awareness-raising event, held at the Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria in November 2024, was an amazing success!
More than 120 people attended, learning about the GVPF’s programs to build connections between youth and volunteer police officers from the four municipal police agencies of Oak Bay, Central Saanich, Victoria and Esquimalt and Saanich.
GVPF Board Chair, Robert Jawl, provided the audience with an update on where we are today and what we hope to achieve in the next 18 months. Our vision is that these communities experience positive change driven by youth through empowering citizenship and leadership programs.
Our current programs include Police Camp, the GVPF Mentorship Program, the GVPF Awards at Camosun College and the new Junior Police Camp program.
All of our programs are funded through the generosity of donors and as we look to expand our programs, we know we need to build new, strong and lasting relationships with collaborators, leaders, decision-makers and supporters throughout our region.
To illustrate the impact of our programs, Police Camp alumna Nuvra Kumar shared her story of how participation transformed not only her life and career goals, but also her feelings toward and understanding of police officers and policing.
Nuvra’s remarks were raw, emotional and incredibly inspiring. Many in the audience were visibly moved, and all gave a rousing standing ovation to this impressive young woman. You can hear from Nuvra yourself in a video from Police Camp 2024 available at https://vimeo.com/942783160.
