In our continuing commitment to provide programs and opportunities for youth to develop their potential, we were pleased to establish the GVPF Awards in partnership with Camosun College this year. The awards honour students with a demonstrated commitment to volunteerism, leadership and mentorship within their community.
The $2,500 awards are available to four students each year pursuing studies in two different streams – any program within the Mental Health and Addictions discipline at the School of Health and Human Services and any program within the Criminal Justice programs at the School of Arts and Science.
Last week, three inaugural recipients of these awards were recognized at an inspiring ceremony. Saverina Covello, Christie Robbins and Crystal Urlacher, are pursuing degrees in order to work in the field of community safety and mental health and addictions, while enrolled in the Criminal Justice Department at Camosun’s School of Arts and Science. Their many volunteer commitments include Cool Aid, Our Place, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Indigenous organizations across Victoria serving those who may be in conflict with the law, unhoused, or struggling with addictions or mental health challenges.
GVPF Director Melanie Mahlman attended the ceremony and presented the awards on behalf of the Foundation.
“Camosun College did an incredible job selecting these students for the inaugural GVPF Awards. They are an inspiration, dedicated to making the world a better place for everyone and contributing to our community already in a profound way through their volunteerism. We hope to stay connected to them on their journey through school and as they use their education to help others,” said Melanie.
A fourth award, The Greater Victoria Police Foundation Award for Mental Health and Addictions, will be presented later this year.
