Police Camp 2025 – a Parent’s Perspective

As Police Camp 2025 wrapped up, the Greater Victoria Police Foundation received a moving email from one of the participant’s parents which summarized the amazing impact the program can have on local youth.

“Hello,

My daughter, Fiona, was fortunate to be selected for Police Camp this year. She was hesitant to apply and still hesitant to attend once accepted. Her older sister encouraged her to go through with the camp however, and although nervous, she decided it was the right decision to attend.

I encouraged Fiona to apply because of the female mentorship she would receive, the people she would meet and the skills she would gain and be able to apply to the next chapter of her life as she graduates high school this year. I hoped she would increase her leadership skills and build her self-confidence. I knew she would be challenged in ways she hadn’t previously experienced and would face hurdles she hadn’t expected. All of these skills and challenges are important for young people to experience, but there just are not a lot of opportunities to have such a focused experience with so many skilled and willing mentors.

The week did have a positive and lasting impact on Fiona. She was keen to put her hand up has been accepted to participate in the youth camp in July and is looking forward to working with the junior participants.

I want to thank the board, the volunteers, and Kim specifically, for creating and executing such an important experience for young people. The impact is one our community as a whole benefits from.

Sincerely,

Shannon B.”

We are grateful to Shannon for sharing her and Fiona’s experience.
